MARIETTA—Chattahoochee Tech men’s basketball signed two incoming freshmen on Thursday, the first two players in the 2012 recruiting class. Malcolm Riley, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Selma High School in Selma, Ala., and Montford Varnedoe, a 6-5 forward from Action Sports Academy in Stone Mountain, Ga., signed LOIs with CTC at the college’s Marietta campus.
Riley averaged 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a senior in 2010-11 for Selma. He was a participant in the North-South Alabama All-Star Game as a senior.
“Malcolm is a versatile player who we expect to be able to play multiple positions for us, while also giving us more size when he’s at the 1 or 2 spots on the floor,” said head coach David Archer. “He is going to be able to provide us with some scoring punch in various ways. We are very lucky to land a player of his caliber.”
Varnedoe averaged six points, eight rebounds and four blocks per game in his one year at Action Sports Academy, in which the team went 26-9.
“Montford is one of those players who will help glue things together,” Archer said. “He is a hustle guy who will provide active defense and will clean things up on the offensive end. He will be key for us.”
Both players will have two years of eligibility for the Golden Eagles, who finished 19-12 last season while finishing fifth in the GCAA conference. CTC is entering its third year of NJCAA competition.
