SMYRNA, Ga. – Chattahoochee Tech fell 76-74 in a tightly contested first-round Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament game against Atlanta Metro on Tuesday night at the Smyrna Community Center, bringing to a close the Golden Eagles' 2014-15 season.
With the game tied 74-74, Atlanta Metro had an inbounds play with 0.3 seconds after a deflected pass went out of bounds near half court. The Atlanta Metro lob pass towards the rim caromed off the backboard on the ensuing inbounds, but the intended target — Trailblazers center Glenn Holloway — drew a foul with no time elapsed off the clock and hit both free throws to give Atlanta Metro the win.
The Golden Eagles finish the year at 22-9 overall, and 10-9 in conference.
Elijah Robinson, the game-high scorer with 27 points, scored 12 points in the final four minutes, including three three-pointers. His final triple with 48.3 seconds remaining brought the Golden Eagles to within two points at 71-69. After Brice Booker of Atlanta Metro made 1-of-2 free throws on a 1-and-1 trip to the line, an Xavier Allen trey tied the game at 72-72 with 22 seconds remaining.
After two more made free throws by Atlanta Metro, the game appeared headed to overtime when CTC reserve guard Malcolm Hannah hit two free throws to tie it up at 74-74 with eight seconds left. After a chaotic sequence following the Atlanta Metro inbounds pass, the deflected ball out of bounds set up the inbounds pass that led to Atlanta Metro's winning free throws.
Robinson's 27 points came on 9-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three; the Excel Christian (Cartersville, Ga.) product also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. DiMychael Ross was the Golden Eagles' second-leading scorer with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Ross, from Allatoona High School (Acworth, Ga.), was the team's leading rebounder with eight and added three assists.
Zach Landis of Mill Creek High School (Hoschton, Ga.) had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and a game-high six steals. A.J. Mosby of Cartersville High School (Cartersville, Ga.) scored eight points and had three rebounds.
Isaac Everett had 26 and Michael Brittain had 20 to lead the Trailblazers (15-18, 9-10), who move on to the quarterfinals of the GCAA tournament.
Chattahoochee Tech led 35-34 at the half after a back-and-forth period. Nick Hughes of Harrison High School (Kennesaw, Ga.) scored four straight points on 4-of-4 free throw shooting to put the Golden Eagles ahead 32-30 with under two minutes remaining in the half.
The Golden Eagles completed five three-point plays, two for Robinson and three for Ross. The Golden Eagles held Atlanta Metro to 1-of-9 three-point shooting but the Trailblazers made 30-of-55 overall from the field.
There were 16 ties and 16 lead changes in the game, and the biggest lead for either team was six points when Atlanta Metro led 63-57 with 4:10 remaining in the game.
