Chatt Tech out of GCAA Tournament after first-round loss to Georgia Highlands

SMYRNA – Chattahoochee Tech's season came to a close on Tuesday night after an 88-74 loss in the first round of the GCAA Tournament at the Smyrna Community Center. The Golden Eagles, the league's No. 2 seed, fell behind early to the No. 7 seed Georgia Highlands and fell short in a second-half rally attempt. Amonte Potter, who was named this week to the All-GCAA First Team and as conference Freshman of the Year, led all scorers with 25 points while second-team GCAA honoree Alyja Hennings scored 24.

The Golden Eagles (25-6, 15-5 GCAA) behind 41-25 at halftime, but came back in the second stanza to cut the lead to as little as four points. A Markez Dix dunk midway through the half made it a 52-48 game, but the Golden Eagles would pull no closer. Georgia Highlands (16-15, 10-10) made 27 of 34 of its free-throw attempts to just a 10-of-16 rate for the Golden Eagles, which helped the Chargers keep their distance down the stretch.

Sherrod Wade was the only other Golden Eagle in double-figure scoring as he chipped in 10 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Dix pulled down 11 rebounds and had six points, two blocked shots and two steals. Alijah Bennett scored seven points off the bench for Chattahoochee Tech.

For the Chargers, who now move on to face Central Georgia Tech on Friday in Round 2 of the GCAA Tournament, Donovan Harris led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle at 37 to 34, and committed just nine turnovers in the game.
