SMYRNA, Ga. – The Chattahoochee Tech hoops teams swept Southern Crescent on Thursday night at the Smyrna Community Center thanks to two 30-point games from star players.
In the two nonconference matchups, A.J. Mosby’s 36 points helped the men to a 79-71 win and Aysia Grimsley’s 35 led the women to a 76-58 victory, their first of the year. Both players logged all 40 minutes in the wins.
Mosby’s 36 points came on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. The Cartersville High alum added six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Ryan Davis (Cartersville) added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Jordan Oliver (Rabun County) chipped in 11 points off the bench with four rebounds and two steals. Arthur Bennett (McEachern) added 14 rebounds, six points and two blocks.
The men (17-1, No. 14 NJCAA Division I) trailed 32-31 at halftime and found themselves trailing by one point with 10 minutes to play, 50-49, before taking the lead for good and pulling away. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 14 points, 78-64, late in the game. The team shot 28-of-55 from the floor for a 50.9 percent clip.
The women’s team moved to 1-14 on the season, holding off a Southern Crescent rally to cruise to a double-digit win in the fourth quarter. Grimsley (Sprayberry) was 11-of-12 from the line, including a perfect 10-of-10 in the final quarter, to keep the Lady Golden Eagles out in front. Grimsley added eight rebounds, three blocks and five steals. Also playing all 40 was Fernanda Silva (Wheeler), who finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Diamond White (Osborne) added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Rovianie Bellier (Centennial) had 14 rebounds and two steals.
The men look forward to a big matchup at No. 2 Georgia Highlands in Rome on Monday for a clash between the only two unbeaten teams in the GCAA Division I standings; Georgia Highlands holds a 17-1 overall record and 6-0 mark in GCAA play, while Chattahoochee Tech is 4-0 in conference. The women, 0-4 in league play, will start the night with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Georgia Highlands (13-8, 6-1 GCAA), with the men following at 7:30 p.m.
