DALLAS, Ga. – For the second time in program history, Chattahoochee Tech will host the NJCAA Half-marathon National Championships on a stretch of the renowned Silver Comet Trail in Dallas near the college's Paulding County campus this Saturday.
Nearly 200 runners from 19 different schools will compete in the event, which Chattahoochee Tech first hosted in 2011. The NJCAA again awarded CTC the championship during its May meetings last year, and Golden Eagles head cross country coach Steve Prettyman is serving as meet director.
The course received high marks from participants and coaches during the 2011 competition. The route will be the same as in 2011, with the participants starting the race at the Paulding County Governmental Center and then quickly transitioning to the Silver Comet Trail, ending near Tara Drummond Park. The women will begin at 8 a.m., and the men will start shortly after at 8:15.
The annual championship race is open to all eligible NJCAA athletes, and routinely attracts some of the country's top cross country runners and teams. Individual and team champions will be crowned for both men and women.
There are 100 men's runners from 17 teams and 91 women from 15 teams competing on Saturday. Running in this year's event are a number of athletes who finished near the top of the individual cross country championships hosted last weekend by Iowa Central Community College. Half-marathon participants Iowa Central, Cloud County, El Paso, Spartanburg Methodist and Vincennes all placed runners in the top 10 in either the men's or women's cross country finals.
