Golden Eagles men hold on for 93-85 win over Cincinnati State

Smryna, GA - The Chatt Tech Golden Eagles moved to 4-0 on the young season, after knocking off the visiting Cincinnati State Surge who came in as the #7 ranked NJCAA D2 team in the country.

The Surge jumped out early, taking a 9-3 lead, but the Eagles gained some composure and began clipping off transition baskets by breaking Cincy's full court pressure and converting easy baskets.  The home team was able to build a double-digit lead just before half time, before settling for a respectable 39-30 lead at the break.

In the second half, Cincinnati made a run to cut the deficit in the opening minutes, but the Eagles again began taking advantage of holes in the Surge press. Maintaining a healthy 12-13 point lead much of the the way, CTC pushed out to a 22 point margin at one point late in the half, after long range bombs by Corey Tobin, coupled by several resounding slams by Nick Hughes and Nkem Ojeh.

Despite being down big, Cincy State didn't lay down, as they went small on the floor, looking for perimeter shots -- which they got from Corey Smith and Justin Baker, who combined for five treys in the final couple of minutes to trim the CTC lead down to eight by the end of the game.

For the Surge, Smith finished with 21 points, while drilling six trifectas. Baker chipped in with 17. The Surge downed 13 threes total in the contest.

Ojeh led a balance scoring attack with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Hughes scored 17, Tobin 12, Ryan Davis and AJ Mosby 11 each and Keith Ray 10. Davis also tallied 10 assists and five steals in the game. Mosby also swiped seven steals, while Tobin dished out eight assists.

The Golden Eagles shot 52.4% overall from the floor, but struggled in going 21-39 from the freethrown line as a team. Defensively, CTC held the Surge to only 34.8% shooting from the floor on the night.

The Eagles now get set to go on the road to face Gadsden State in Alabama.
