Men’s hoops picks up GCAA conference win; women fall again

SMYRNA – Chattahoochee Tech men's hoops earned a GCAA Division I victory over East Georgia on Saturday at the Smyrna Community Center in an 89-76 victory, while the women's team remains winless in the conference after its 81-49 defeat.

The Golden Eagles men (10-2, 4-2) played the Bobcats to a close first-half score, 39-38, but efficient shooting in the second stanza helped the team eventually pull away for the 13-point win. Chatt Tech quickly pushed the lead to 58-42 in the second half, then withstood an East Georgia (6-5, 2-2) rally that brought the score back to 59-57 at one point.

Chatt Tech was paced by 24 points from Alyja Hennings, who also pulled down nine rebounds and had three assists. Other Golden Eagles in double figures included Alijah Bennett (17 points, five rebounds), Darreontae Moore (13 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, 3-of-4 from three and 4-for-5 from the floor) and Amonte Potter (11 points, five assists, two steals).

Sherrod Wade also had a strong night off the bench with nine points and seven boards, and Markez Dix grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Jon Blair led East Georgia with 16 points.

The men are tied for second place with Atlanta Metro in the GCAA Division I standings at the moment, behind 3-1 South Georgia Tech, which suffered its first conference loss, to Albany Tech, on Saturday.

Before the game, head coach David Archer was honored with a plaque recognizing his 100th win as a collegiate head coach, which he picked up against West Georgia Tech on Dec. 6.

The Lady Golden Eagles fell to 2-9 and 0-7 in GCAA play with their home loss to East Georgia (7-6, 3-2) Saturday. The team was led by the guard tandem of Tiana Gray (16 points, five rebounds) and Rose Robinson (12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals). Courtney Street had a strong line of six points, six rebounds and five steals, and Bri Tiggs pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles men play an exhibition tilt Sunday in Cartersville against Faith Baptist Prep at 6:30 p.m. at the John H. Morgan Gym. After that contest, both teams are off until after the New Year, with the Golden Eagles taking on BC Howren in a non-conference game, followed by conference play picking back up on Jan. 8 at home against South Georgia College.
