Smyrna, GA - Georgia Highlands, the #18 ranked team in the land, fought off the Eagles for an important GCAA Conference win on Sunday afternoon at the Community Center.
The Chargers' aggressive play helped them stimy the Eagles in the first half. After jumping out big, the Chargers slowed, allowing CTC some wiggle room, cutting the score down to two with 2 minutes left in the half behind a flurry of threes by Xavier Allen, Dimychael Ross and Trevin Steede. But, Highlands went on a quick 5-0 run to end the half, going in up 43-36.
In the second, the Eagles came out very slow, falling down by as many as 20 at one point. But, with about 10 minutes to go, the Eagles began to mount another impressive run, which has become a signature through this season when getting behind. Making the run more difficult was the fact the Chargers were still scoring periodically, keeping the Eagles at bey.
After milking the lead down to two in the closing seconds, the Eagles simply ran out of time. After taking the ball out with 12 seconds on the clock, with a chance to tie or go ahead a broken play found the ball in the hands of Dimychael Ross, who launched a three attempt from 22 feet with five seconds on the clock. The ball bounced around, with players from both teams clamoring to gain control as the clock expired.
Xavier Allen had another outstanding outing with 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting, while Ross scored 19, Elijah Robinson and Steede 13 each, and AJ Mosby 12.
The Eagles shot 53% from the field and 50% from the arc, but only shot 14 of 26 from the freethrow line. Conversely, Highlands shot only 39% from the field and 26% from behind the three point line.
