WALESKA, Ga. – Behind clutch free throw shooting and a team-high 18 points from A.J. Mosby, Chattahoochee Tech knocked off South Georgia State, ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division I rankings, 76-75 on Friday night at Reinhardt University.
The Golden Eagles (18-5, 6-5 GCAA) hung on for victory after Zach Landis made two free throws with 22 seconds left to push the Golden Eagles' lead to 76-73. Two free throws on the other end for South Georgia State pulled the visiting Hawks within one point, but Chattahoochee Tech was able to avoid foul attempts after the inbounds pass to run out the clock. The loss is the Hawks' first of the season in GCAA play.
The Golden Eagles struggled with fouls for much of the night, as South Georgia State hit 22-of-29 free throw attempts, but the Golden Eagles stayed ahead down the stretch thanks to 17-of-21 foul shooting (81 percent) and 7-of-18 shooting (39 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Mosby finished 6-of-12 from the field, 5-of-8 from three, and also pulled down six rebounds, while Landis's 17 points came with a team-high four assists and game-high four steals.
Carl Washington contributed 10 points, off of two treys, Dimychael Ross had seven points and eight boards and Trevin Steede pulled down seven boards for the Golden Eagles.
Jovante' Spivey kept the game close for South Georgia State (20-2, 9-1) down the stretch, as he scored a game-high 26 points.
Chattahoochee Tech led 33-31 at the half after jumping out to a 13-3 lead, the biggest for any team in the game. From there, it was back and forth with the Golden Eagles' stifling perimeter defense keeping the Hawks in check. Chattahoochee Tech held the Hawks to just 24-of-63 shooting from the field overall, but most importantly kept South Georgia State from mounting a comeback by holding them to just 5-of-22 from three-point land, including a paltry 2-of-14 in the second half.
The Golden Eagles have now won three of their last four conference games to sit alone in fourth place in the 10-team league, and next get a visit from Gordon State College, who is one game back in the standings and took the teams' first meeting 75-72. The Golden Eagles and Highlanders will tip off at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday at the Smyrna Community Center.
Lady Eagles Notes: League leading Darton College put a 115-41 defeat on the Lady Eagles, who are still managing to get through the games with just five players. Deidra Morris and Aujaia Cox each scored 13 points and Darlecia Bonds collected 11 in the loss.
