DEMOREST, Ga. – Chattahoochee Tech shooting guard Alyja Hennings has been named by the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association coaches as the GCAA Division I Player of the Week after leading the Golden Eagles to three conference wins in four days.
In victories over South Georgia, Middle Georgia and Albany Tech, Hennings, out of Milton High School in Milton, Ga., averaged 22 points, 8.6 rebounds, four steals, 3.3 assists and one block per game. The 6-foot-3 sophomore shot 53.1 percent (26-of-49) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from three, and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles' victory at South Georgia last Wednesday saw Hennings score 20 points, pull down eight rebounds and dish four assists in Chatt Tech's 94-90 overtime victory. On Friday, Hennings' 24 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists led the team in all four categories in the Golden Eagles' 88-70 victory at Middle Georgia. Then, returning to home court on Saturday at the Smyrna Community Center, Hennings again led Chatt Tech with 22 points and five steals to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double performance in an 82-67 win over Albany Tech. The three-game stretch pushed the Golden Eagles' overall record to 23-5 and 13-5 in GCAA play to keep them alone in second place.
For the season, Hennings is averaging 18.2 points per game to lead the team and place sixth in GCAA Division I. He also leads the Golden Eagles in five other major categories, including rebounding (7.4 per game, 13th in conference); field-goal percentage (52.1 percent, eighth); three-point percentage (42.6, second); free-throw percentage (80.4, sixth); and steals (1.9 per game, sixth).
Hennings is the second player this season to win Player of the Week honors, as backcourt mate Alijah Bennett won the award back in January.
The Golden Eagles finish up regular-season conference play this week with road matchups at Gordon this Tuesday and at Georgia Perimeter this Thursday.
