SMYRNA – The Chattahoochee Tech men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a key GCAA victory over South Georgia Tech at home Friday night, winning 77-74.
The Golden Eagles (20-5, 10-5) defeated the Jets by pulling away in the final minute. Tied at 72-72 with 1:04 remaining, Alijah Bennett found Elijah Robinson on the baseline for a dunk over an SGT defender to go ahead for good. From there, a Bennett free throw and two foul shots from Amonte Potter pushed the lead to five points, and the Golden Eagles held on for the victory over the first-place GCAA Jets (21-4, 12-3), who had climbed as high as No. 12 in the NJCAA rankings this week.
The nip-and-tuck game saw the top two teams in the GCAA go through 25 lead changes and eight ties. South Georgia Tech held a 32-31 lead at halftime.
"To come out against the No. 12 team in the country and the No. 1 team in our conference, and fight the way we did for 40 minutes, says a lot about what we can potentially do down the stretch," said Chattahoochee Tech head coach David Archer.
Bennett led the Golden Eagles with 18 points to go along with three assists and two steals. As a team, Chattahoochee Tech picked up 10 steals and forced 19 SGT turnovers. Potter led in that category with four takeaways, and also reached double-digit points with 16 and four assists. Alyja Hennings contributed 12 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Anthony Ethridge of South Georgia Tech was game-high scorer and rebounder at 24 points and 13 boards. Markez Dix led the Golden Eagles on the glass with eight rebounds to go with two blocked shots. The Golden Eagles also got a boost from long distance with two threes from Reggie Thompson, who finished with seven points.
Chattahoochee Tech will travel this week to South Georgia College (15-10, 8-7) on Wednesday and Middle Georgia College (7-17, 4-10) on Friday.
