MARIETTA – Freshman shooting guard Alijah Bennett was voted by the coaches of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association as its Player of the Week for his play in Golden Eagles victories against Albany Tech, Gordon State College and Georgia Highlands College.
Bennett, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga., scored a career-high 34 points in Chattahoochee Tech's 90-86 Jan. 13 home win over Gordon State, shooting 13-of-19 overall from the field and 6-of-12 from three-point range while getting two steals. In the Golden Eagles' 85-72 Jan. 18 win at Georgia Highlands, Bennett was once again the game-high scorer with 23 points to go along with 10 assists and two steals. He shot 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three in the Golden Eagles' road win. Bennett scored six points in an 83-78 road victory at Albany Tech on Jan. 15, and finished the week with a scoring average of 21 points per game.
For the season, Bennett is averaging 15.0 points per game, good for third on the team, and a team-best 2.5 three-pointers per game. He leads the team with 3.4 assists per game and is second with 1.9 steals per contest.
Bennett and the Golden Eagles (16-3, 8-3 GCAA Division I) will next be in action this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at home in the Smyrna Community Center against GCAA Division III Southern Crescent Tech in a non-league game. Chattahoochee Tech currently sits alone in second place in conference play.
