Golden Eagles win conference thriller against Gordon State, 90-86

SMYRNA – The Chattahoochee Tech men's hoops team, coming off a tough road loss to South Georgia Tech last Saturday, got back on track by earning a 90-86 GCAA win in a back-and-forth affair against Gordon State College on Monday before a packed house at the Smyrna Community Center.
Freshman shooting guard Alijah Bennett set a career high in points with 34, shooting 13-of-19 overall from the field and 6-of-12 from beyond the three-point line.

The Golden Eagles (14-3, 6-3) led 36-32 at the half, then shot out to an 11-point margin in the early minutes of the second period. Gordon State (10-4, 1-4), however, retook the lead with a run of their own and led by as many as seven in the second half.

The final lead change of the game took place with under a minute to go when Bennett hit a three-pointer that gave the Golden Eagles an 88-86 advantage. Then, after a Gordon State timeout with 10.6 seconds to go, point guard Amonte Potter came up with a steal and was quickly fouled with 5.7 seconds remaining. Potter knocked down both free throws to give Chattahoochee Tech a four-point lead that would hold. The Golden Eagles made 11 of 12 free throws and shot 9-of-20 on threes in the second half. The two teams came out even in the second period, each scoring 54 points.

Alyja Hennings was Chattahoochee Tech's second leading scorer with 16 points and leading rebounder with 12 boards. Potter contributed 15 points and three assists, and Reggie Thompson had 10 points off the bench. The Golden Eagles turned the ball over just 11 times and forced Gordon State into 19 turnovers, which they converted into 20 points.

Rudy Winters did the damage for Gordon with 26 points, while Denarious Lockhart pounded in 16 to go with 19 rebounds, followed by Michael Pack's 13.

In the women's game, the Lady Eagles fought valiantly in a close 68-61 loss against Spartanburg Methodist.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday at Albany Tech in GCAA games, with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men following at 7:30.
